The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on drugs that are being promoted as potentially dangerous and unsafe by regulators.
In response to the latest FDA warning, Canadian drugmaker Teva Pharmaceuticals (NYSE: TEVA) said on Friday that it is warning patients about a new safety information card for Viagra.
“We are taking a hard look at this new information card as we are reviewing the potential risks and possible harmful effects associated with this information,” the company said.
The new information card is an update to the FDA’s older and recommended drug warning on the pill formulary and includes information about possible side effects including headache, stomach pain, back pain, muscle aches, back and muscle pain, nasal congestion, dizziness, blurred vision, and changes in blood pressure, according to the statement.
Viagra is the only FDA-approved drug to treat erectile dysfunction, and it is the first FDA-approved drug for the treatment of male impotence and is available in generic form in Canada. A generic version is expected to arrive in the second half of 2014.
The agency said it was aware of the new information card but was not aware of its warning.
The information card was introduced after studies showed that patients taking the medication had lower blood pressure and heart rate. Viagra is the most widely-used ED medication, and it’s used to treat impotence.
It is also approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of other diseases, including pulmonary hypertension and certain types of cancer.
Viagra and other ED drugs also can cause erections that last longer and harder than normal. A study of 18,000 men taking Viagra in 2013 found that men taking a four-week course of Viagra had erections lasting more than four hours, as well as more than four times that of men taking a four-week course of Cialis.
The new warning comes amid growing concerns about the risks of drugs that could cause sexual problems for men.
In 2013, the FDA also recommended that the warning about sexual problems associated with ED be removed from the drug’s label.
The FDA has not issued a warning about the new warning on Viagra since then, according to a press release from Teva. However, Teva is working with a number of pharmaceutical companies to address the issue, including the makers of, an impotence drug. Some of those companies are still trying to resolve the FDA’s concerns about Viagra’s safety.
Viagra is the only FDA-approved drug to treat erectile dysfunction. It’s also approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. In 2013, the FDA said the warning was based on a study of more than 2,400 men with erectile dysfunction and had not been found to be statistically significant. That study did not include other factors, such as age or personal health status, that could cause the medication to increase blood flow to the penis.
In the FDA warning, the FDA said it was aware of the risk of sexual side effects from Viagra and its other drugs, including Levitra and Cialis.
“This new information about potential sexual side effects of Viagra is concerning and could potentially result in dangerous side effects,” the agency wrote in a press release. “The FDA continues to be concerned about the safety of these medications and is committed to working with regulatory agencies to address these concerns.”
The FDA also issued a press release stating that the FDA is monitoring the safety of Viagra and its other drugs, including Cialis and Levitra, and is reviewing how it is used in men taking these drugs.
A spokesman for the manufacturer, Teva, said the company is “reviewing the information presented in this announcement and is working with its regulatory agencies to address the potential safety issues identified in this release.”
A spokeswoman for Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Viagra, said that the FDA’s “review of this information is a timely and critical step in our efforts to ensure that these products are safe and effective.”The manufacturer of Cialis, the world’s biggest drug maker, has said it is reviewing the safety information about Viagra and related drugs.
“We are aware of the concerns raised by the FDA and will continue to work with our regulatory agencies to address these concerns,” the company said. “We will continue to monitor the safety and efficacy of Viagra and its related drugs in men taking these products.
